Fall Colors

September 7th, 2009

Thanks for visiting the site and this blog. As the leaves begin to change (very early this year), I am working on changes of my own with new glaze recipes and continuing the other faves of mine too.

The new micro-crystalline glaze body of work creates a fusion of cool colors and textures, with subtle crystal growth throughout the pieces. Hoping you will enjoy this new series of work…let me know! New work will be for sale online, exhibited at the fall art shows, and displayed at my gallery. Hoping to see you! And, thanks for taking your time to look and comment!

Holiday Open House

November 9th, 2009

The leaves are down and the sunlight twinkles across the hay fields, dancing on the frost. The holidays are fast approaching and we are gearing up for our annual Holiday Open House. This year, on Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6, the gallery will be full of many new works in stoneware and porcelain pottery.

Larry has been busy tweaking his newest glaze recipes; multi-layered micro-crystalline ash glazes and continuing with some of his signature glaze palettes, all applied to his thrown and altered forms. Lots of new pots for the winter season.

The photographer, Kyle Spears, will have a selection of new images on hand - Urban Insights: New York, from a fall 2009 excursion.

Hoping you can find your way “over the river and through the woods” to join us for our Holiday Open House. Light refreshments will be available…..looking forward to seeing you December 5 and 6 (10-5 daily)……..and Happy Holidays to all!

Clay Day 2011

July 30th, 2011

For nearly a decade and a half, Clay Day has been an annual tradition for potter Larry Spears. Held at Spears Gallery on the first Saturday in August (from 9-5 on August 6, 2011), this one day mini-workshop continues to offer the public an opportunity to-do raku. “One of the translations of raku is ‘happiness through chance,’” says Spears. “I like that translation because it defines the surprise aspect of it (raku).” The raku glazes and firing process can create an exciting range of color, a variety of surface interest, and many one-of-a-kind pieces.

Mr. Spears, (along with fellow potters Jeff Unzicker and Robert Pulley), will offer several sizes and shapes of thrown and bisque-fired raku ware, to be glazed and decorated by anyone with an artistic desire to do so. Following glazing each piece, the potters will place the glazed pieces in raku kilns, with a firing time ranging from 20 to 30 minutes. The pottery is then removed from the kiln, while still glowing red, and placed in a container filled with various combustible materials. The material instantly ignites and the potters proceed with the “reduction” aspect of the firing process, by covering the containers and cutting off the oxygen supply to the piece. The piece is then submersed in a water bath to cool, and lastly cleaned.

Again, the date for this years’ event is Saturday, August 6, from 9a.m. to 5p.m.

The annual Clay Day is hosted by Spears Gallery, (5110 St. Rd. 135 South, Nashville) located in scenic southern Brown County, Indiana; just 7 miles off of Indiana State Road 46, on Indiana State Road 135 South, (just beyond the Horseman’s Camp entrance to Brown County State Park and on your way to Story).
